"Using an Oath of Office, or Your Code of Conduct,
to 'Power Up' Your Ethics and Compliance Program"

** POSTPONED **

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

2:00 - 3:00 p.m. ET

Presented by

Mary Roodkowsky
Special Adviser, Ethics
UNICEF

In the United Nations system, all staff take an oath of office. In UNICEF, we have been using this as the basis for face-to-face training, which has proven very effective and has been described as "a turning point" or "an inspirational session that makes sense." This webcast will look at how that oath is used to bring out in the open staff members' passion for making a difference in the world—and then link the UN's more-restrictive regulations and rules to this calling to promote the common good. While an oath is generally considered a characteristic of civil services, it is consistent with the ethical vision and statement of values in other organizations' codes of conduct. For that reason, the ethics and compliance field may want to consider the applicability of an oath—or, at least, its spirit—as it moves toward becoming a true profession.

Mary RoodkowskyMary Roodkowsky is currently the ethics officer at UNICEF where her role includes building an ethical environment and administering the financial disclosure and whistleblower programs.

Ms. Roodkowsky has been with the UN since 1980, most of that time in developing countries. From 1998 to 2002, Ms. Roodkowsky was the UNICEF Representative in Niger, where she opened new cooperation with the traditional chiefs who started to speak out against marriage of young girls and for universal primary education.

Ms. Roodkowsky came to New York at the end of 2002 to put her field experience to work in the area of UN reform, first with the UN Development Group Office and then at UNICEF headquarters.

Ms. Roodkowsky studied religion and philosophy at Wellesley College, and has a masters degree from Harvard Divinity School where she studied ethics and theology.
