COURSE DESCRIPTION
A genuine understanding of pertinent legal and regulatory standards is critical for ethics and compliance (E&C) officers who seek to be effective. To help practitioners achieve this goal, the ECOA is pleased to announce a new webcast course, ECOA Law School, a first-of-its-kind program serving the E&C field. ECOA Law School provides a dynamic learning experience that focuses exclusively on the many U.S. and multinational areas of law and regulation that all E&C officers should understand. Those with little or no formal legal education are encouraged to attend, as are attorneys who never specialized, or are seeking a refresher, in the topics covered by the course.
Jeff Kaplan, a partner at Kaplan & Walker LLP with nearly 20 years of E&C experience, is the program director for ECOA Law School. Pre-class readings and study questions are assigned. In addition to an interactive presentation by the instructor, each class will include discussion focused on, among other things, application of the relevant legal principles directed to the work of E&C officers.

COURSE AGENDA
Each delivery of ECOA Law School features seven webcast sessions, running 90 minutes each, from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. ET on Wednesdays. The first session begins Wednesday, August 18, 2010, with one webcast weekly per the schedule below. (Please note that there is no session scheduled on September 22 due to ECOA's Annual Ethics and Compliance Conference.) ECOA Law School provides members of E&C offices with a general foundation in and an understanding of current issues in the following subjects (followed by faculty):

- Pertinent legislation, regulations, rules, and leading cases
- Enforcement standards and trends
- E&C program best practices
A certificate of completion is awarded to those who participate in the sessions and successfully complete a course project. To receive the certificate, a participant must attend no fewer than five sessions and “make up” any missed session(s) in the next cycle.
This course is one of two, new, ECOA distance-learning offerings. The other is ECOA Ethics School, which follows the same educational model as ECOA Law School. The design of ECOA Ethics School reflects the fact that many E&C officers have little or no practical education in applied ethics. Given the complexity of this difficult subject, and how important it is that an organization can count on its E&C officer to understand applied ethics, ECOA Ethics School focuses on the principal underpinnings of organizational ethics, as well as research from the behavioral sciences that inform the field. The course topics include ethical reasoning, decision-making, and culture—all set in a highly practical context relevant to a broad spectrum of E&C practitioners.
