Measuring Individual and Organizational Ethics: An Inventory of Methods and Instruments Bradley R. Agle, PhD, Associate Professor, Katz Graduate School of Business, University of Pittsburgh Have you ever wondered what tools for metrics are out there, and, more importantly, whether they have been validated (that is, do they really measure what they say they’re measuring)? Now you’ve got the opportunity to hear from the metrics experts on the reliability and validity of those surveys, ratings, questionnaires, screens, and rankings. Drs. Agle, Hart, and Thompson reviewed the ethics literature looking for all the ways that researchers in business and academia have measured various individual and organizational ethical dimensions. They then identified, catalogued, and critiqued these methods. In this session, participants will learn how their investigation can be used by ethics and compliance practitioners in their own ethics and compliance programs. Areas of measurement include the following at the individual level: ethical recognition, ethical reasoning, ethical leadership, etc. Organizational level measures include: ethical culture/climate, corporate social responsibility, etc. Although much of their research will have been completed by the time of the conference presentation, they welcome participants’ input to refine their approach and to create a final product that will be helpful to all who seek to measure ethical dimensions in their organizations and benchmark across organizations.
