Fine Tuning Your Code of Business Conduct When It’s Up for Revision Randall Peterson, Vice President & Chief Compliance Officer, Sempra Energy A code of business conduct is the informational cornerstone of an effective ethics and compliance program and should outline the behavioral expectations that an organization holds for its employees. Such codes are now commonplace and increasingly shared, not only with employees, but with customers, vendors, shareholders, and the general public as well. The widespread use and appreciation for the potential effectiveness of a quality code has set expectations high for those creating or revising them. To be successful, a code of business conduct must be credible to all stakeholders to which it applies. How the code itself is written, what it contains (and doesn’t), and how it is communicated all play important roles in whether it has the power to influence not only perceptions, but also actions. This session will explore leading practices in developing an effective and compelling code, and share the experience of Sempra Energy in the evolution of its own.
